Hello, I’m Alison Thomson, a Play Therapist registered with Play Therapy UK (PTUK), a professional body accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
I am on the Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists that has been accredited by the PSA. This programme was established by the Authority to improve standards and safety for the public and in our field, for children in particular. Being part of this accredited register reflects my commitment to high professional standards, to enhancing safety, and to providing the best possible service for the children and families I support.
I have over 30 years’ experience working with children and families across education, senior leadership, and therapeutic settings, and I am deeply committed to supporting children’s emotional wellbeing through compassionate, child‑centred practice.
My work is grounded in the Integrative Holistic Model of Play Therapy, an evidence-based approach that recognises play as a child’s natural language for communication, exploration, and healing. Through play and creative expression, children are supported to make sense of their experiences, explore emotions safely, and develop healthier ways of coping at their own pace.
Alongside my therapeutic training, I bring extensive experience from my career as a primary teacher and for almost a decade as a Depute Head Teacher in large primary schools in Edinburgh. In these roles, I worked closely with children experiencing a wide range of emotional, social, and developmental challenges, and collaborated with families, schools, and partner agencies to provide holistic support. This background gives me a strong understanding of child development, school systems, safeguarding responsibilities, and the pressures children and families may face.
I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy and a Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills. My therapeutic practice is supported through regular clinical supervision and ongoing professional development, ensuring my work remains ethical, reflective, and responsive. I also contribute to PTUK research through the use of recognised outcome measures and reflective practice.
My training and experience include specialist work in trauma-informed practice, attachment, neurodiversity, and inclusive approaches. I am a trained Incredible Years Practitioner and deliver both the internationally recognised Incredible Years programme and the City of Edinburgh Council’s (CEC) Raising Children with Confidence programme. Both programmes are structured, evidence-based approaches informed by decades of research that support attachment, emotional development, and positive parenting strategies. I have also completed additional training with CEC to support parents and carers in helping children navigate experiences of loss, change, and transitions.
At Heart & Soul Therapeutic Play Practice, I offer a safe, consistent, and nurturing therapeutic space where children can express themselves freely through play, without pressure to talk or explain. I work collaboratively with parents, carers, and schools to support each child’s wellbeing, while maintaining the confidentiality and boundaries essential for effective therapeutic work. Planned endings, regular review, and clear communication are central to my practice.
My approach is relational, thoughtful, and grounded in respect for each child’s unique story. I believe that with the right support, children have an innate capacity to heal, grow, and thrive.
